The future of Glasgow’s Merchant City is under discussion at a second public consultation event for one of Glasgow’s most high-profile city centre development projects this week (Tuesday October 8th).

Joint developers Drum Property Group and Stamford Property Investments have submitted a Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) to Glasgow City Council for the redevelopment of Candleriggs Square, which lies at the heart of Glasgow’s Merchant City.

Bound by Hutcheson Street, Trongate, Candleriggs and Wilson Street, Candleriggs Square is recognised as one of the most important development projects in the city centre. Having lain derelict for over a decade, the site has an existing planning consent for around 850,000 sq. ft. of residential, student, hotel and commercial space.

Welcoming the continuation of the consultation process, Graeme Bone, Group Managing Director of Drum Property Group, said: “There has been a lot of interest so far in the plans, with much positivity about our vision to transform what has become a neglected part of the city centre. We are now showcasing a variety of approaches to inspire the transformation of the site into a vibrant mixed-use community, which is set to complete the regeneration of Glasgow’s Merchant City.

Our intention is to improve on the existing planning consents by making the development more accessible, welcoming and exciting for people living, working and visiting the area. Our plans will bring together high-quality housing, hotels, local amenities and open spaces with new pedestrian links throughout the site."

Joining Drum at the public consultation is TSH - the pan-European investor, developer, owner and operator of a new ‘hybrid hospitality' concept. As part of its accelerated growth programme which includes the UK, TSH is in negotiations with Drum for a plot on the Candleriggs Square site.

TSH currently owns and operates 13 hotels across Europe in leading destinations such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Dresden, Florence, Rotterdam, The Hague, Maastricht and Paris, with a further 12 hotels under development.

TSH offers a mix of functions - including hotel accommodation, co-living and co-working spaces, bar, restaurant, conference rooms and fitness centre - in a creative and inspiring environment that attracts a multitude of different users and guests. Once open to the general public, TSH hopes to make a positive contribution to Glasgow’s local community and businesses.
